Earthquake Depth
Earthquakes in regions where there is little vertical constraint in depth, but suspected of being shallow, are by convention fixed at 33 km depth. Often, say, at the leading edge of subduction zones, the events are now known to be even shallower. However, in order to maintain global and historical consistency in this presentation, all events cataloged as being at 33 km depth or shallower are shown in the same light "sea foam" green. This will mean that regions where good depth control of shallow events exists will not show the depth variation that would be possible with a different depth color scheme.
